Introduction

Großglockner is the highest peak in Austria, standing at a height of 3,798 meters above sea level. Climbing this peak is a challenge for experienced hikers. The trail is steep, with climbing sections and the need to cross a glacier. Proper preparation and specialized climbing equipment are required.

Weather

In the summer, temperatures on Großglockner can range from 0 to 15 degrees Celsius. Conditions are usually stable but variable. Expect storms and snowfall even in the summer season. The sun shines for most of the day, but clouds can also appear.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is in Salzburg. After landing, it is best to go to Kals am Großglockner, where the trailhead is located. Transport from Salzburg to Kals am Großglockner can be arranged by renting a car at the airport or by bus.

Starting point

The starting point of the trail is at the Lucknerhaus car park. From here, we hike up towards the Lucknerhütte shelter.

Route to the summit

The trail leads through a diverse terrain, initially through meadows and forests, and then through rocky and glacial areas. The trail is well marked, but requires proper equipment such as an ice axe, crampons, and a helmet. The estimated time to reach the summit from the starting point is about 5-6 hours. It is important to exercise caution, as some sections are very steep and require climbing skills.

Accommodation

En route to the summit is the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte mountain hut, where you can spend the night and recharge before continuing the climb. The hut offers basic amenities such as sleeping accommodations, meals, and access to drinking water. Reservation of accommodation is recommended, as the hut is popular in the summer season.
