Introduction

Suur Munamägi is the highest peak in Estonia, reaching a height of 318 metres above sea level. It may not be an impressive mountain, but it has its charm. The path to the summit is gentle and easy, and can be completed without any additional climbing equipment. It is an ideal place for families with children and those who want to spend a pleasant time walking amidst beautiful landscapes.

Weather

In summer, temperatures on the trail can reach 20-25 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time for a hike. Conditions are usually dry, and the trail is well maintained. However, it is worth bringing a lightweight jacket in case of cooler moments.

In winter, temperatures on the trail can drop below zero, and periodic snowfall can make movement difficult. Nevertheless, the trail is usually well maintained, but appropriate clothing for winter conditions should be brought.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is Lennart Meri Airport in Tallinn. After landing, you can rent a car or take a bus to the town of Võru, and then to the village of Haanja, where the trail to Suur Munamägi begins.

Starting point

The trail starts in the village of Haanja. You can park your car for free at the parking lot near the tourist information centre. Then follow the signs indicating the way to the summit.

Route to the summit

The trail leads through forests and meadows, and the terrain is gentle and well marked. It takes about 1 hour to reach the summit from the starting point. There is no need to use additional climbing equipment, making the trail accessible to everyone, regardless of age and physical condition.

It is also worth taking the opportunity to visit Võrtsjärv National Park or picturesque lakes in the Võrumaa region.
