Introduction

Mount Olympus' highest peak, Mytikas, stands at an elevation of 2,917 meters and is a perfect destination for mountain enthusiasts seeking to conquer the highest peak in Greece. The trail does not require advanced climbing skills, but hikers should be prepared for steep ascents and variable weather conditions.

Weather

From June to September, the weather is usually favorable for hikers, with temperatures ranging between 15-25 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures can drop below 10 degrees, especially at higher altitudes. It is advisable to bring warm clothing and a lightweight rain jacket.

Winter conditions on Olympus are more challenging, with temperatures dropping below freezing and snow covering the trails. Winter climbing is possible, but requires appropriate experience and professional equipment, including crampons and ice axes.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Thessaloniki's Macedonia Airport, from where you can reach the town of Litochoro, about 90 km away. Travel to Litochoro is possible by car, bus or taxi. From Litochoro, it is recommended to travel to Prionia (1100 meters above sea level), where the trail to the summit begins.

Trailhead

The trailhead is located in Prionia, where you can park your car in the parking lot. From there, you begin the hike towards Spilios Agapitos Mountain Hut, which is about 3-4 hours away.

Summit Trail

The summit trail is well-marked and leads through forest paths and rocky terrain. The climb is not technical, but some sections may be steep. It takes about 3-4 hours to reach Mytikas from Spilios Agapitos Mountain Hut. Remember to bring appropriate footwear and clothing to protect against variable weather conditions.

Accommodation

Spilios Agapitos Mountain Hut is located about 3-4 hours away from the starting point in Prionia and offers lodging and meals, as well as an excellent place to rest before continuing the hike. Booking accommodation is recommended, especially during the summer season when there are more tourists in the mountains. It is also worth noting that there are no other mountain huts or gastronomic points during the hike to the summit, so it is advisable to bring appropriate supplies.
