Kékes is the highest peak in Hungary, with an elevation of 1014 metres above sea level. Although not very high, it is worth a visit. Climbing Kékes is not difficult and can be compared more to a walk. The trail is gentle and not very steep, making it suitable for people of different ages and physical fitness.

In the summer, the temperature on Kékes ranges from 15-25°C. The trail to the peak is dry and snow-free, which is ideal for hiking. However, it is important to remember to bring suitable clothing in case of rain and protection from the sun.

In the winter, temperatures on Kékes are below freezing, and the mountain and surrounding areas are covered in snow. Climbing in winter is more demanding, but with appropriate clothing and equipment, the trail can be conquered without much trouble.

How to Get There?

The nearest airport is Budapest Airport (BUD). After landing, you can get to Mátrafüred, the nearest starting point of the trail, by car or train. The journey by car takes about 1.5 hours, while by train it takes about 2.5 hours.

The starting point of the Kékes trail is in the town of Mátrafüred. You can park your car in one of the nearby parking lots near the starting point. Then, head towards the trail markers that lead to the peak.

Trail to the Peak

The terrain on Kékes is varied, but generally gentle. The trail is well marked, and it takes about 3-4 hours to complete. No additional climbing equipment is required, and even children can manage the trail.

Accommodation

There is no shelter on the way to the Kékes peak. If you plan to stay overnight, it is worth booking a room in a hotel or guesthouse in Mátrafüred or nearby.
