Introduction

Hvannadalshnúkur is Iceland's highest peak, standing at 2,110 m above sea level. It is part of the Vatnajökull glacier and surrounded by stunning landscapes and high cliffs. Climbing Hvannadalshnúkur is challenging, with numerous steep sections and places where climbing equipment is required. The trek to the summit of Hvannadalshnúkur is a challenge worth taking, but be aware that this is a trail for experienced climbers.

Weather

In the summer, conditions on Hvannadalshnúkur are relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 15°C. It is worth bearing in mind that weather in the mountains can be variable and unpredictable. Summer is the best time to climb the peak, as the days are longer and the weather conditions more favorable.

In the winter, conditions on Hvannadalshnúkur are extreme, with heavy snow and ice. This makes climbing even more difficult. Temperatures can drop below -10°C, and winds can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. For this reason, climbing Hvannadalshnúkur in the winter is not recommended for inexperienced climbers.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is Keflavík Airport (KEF). From there, you can drive to Skaftafell, where the trek begins. It is best to rent a car at the airport and head east on Route 1. The drive takes about 4-5 hours.

Trailhead

The trailhead for Hvannadalshnúkur is located at the Skaftafell Visitor Centre. There is a parking lot where you can leave your car during the trek.

Route to the Summit

The route to the summit of Hvannadalshnúkur takes you through varied terrain, including glaciers, moraines, and steep cliffs. The trail is well-marked, but it is advisable to bring a map and GPS. The climb to the summit usually takes around 6-8 hours, while the descent takes another 5-7 hours. It is therefore worth setting out early. Climbing equipment such as crampons, ice axes, and harnesses is necessary for the ascent. Although some sections are less steep, the trail is demanding and unsuitable for inexperienced climbers.

Accommodation

There is no mountain hut en route to the summit of Hvannadalshnúkur. It is worth considering accommodation before setting out on the trek and upon return in Skaftafell. There are various accommodation options such as campsites, hotels, and guesthouses.
