Introduction

Carrantuohill is the highest peak in Ireland, reaching a height of 1038 meters above sea level. The climb is not extremely difficult, but you should expect steep climbs and places where it is necessary to overcome short climbing sections. However, the trail is not so difficult as to require specialized climbing equipment. For this reason, it is suitable for people with moderate physical fitness.

Pogoda

In the summer, Carrantuohill has moderate temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Sometimes it can be foggy, but usually the conditions are pleasant for hiking. However, you should remember that weather in the mountains can change quickly, so it is worth having appropriate clothing and equipment.

In winter, Carrantuohill can be cold and slippery, with snow covering the trail, especially at higher parts of the mountain. Temperatures can drop below 0 degrees Celsius, and the wind can be strong. Climbing in winter requires additional skills, appropriate preparation and clothing.

How to get there?

The nearest airport to Carrantuohill is Kerry Airport (KIR), located about 20 km southeast of the summit. You can rent a car from the airport and drive to Killarney, then further towards Cronin's Yard. Alternatively, you can land at Cork Airport (ORK) and drive or take a bus to Killarney.

Starting point of the trail

The starting point of the trail is located at a place called Cronin's Yard, where you can park your car. It is worth using paid parking, which offers facilities such as toilets and picnic areas.

Route to the summit

The route to the summit of Carrantuohill starts at Cronin's Yard. The trail leads through picturesque areas with marked paths and information signs. Climbing to the summit takes about 3 hours. On some sections, the terrain may be rocky and require some skill and caution, but most of the trail is gentle and does not require specialized climbing equipment. It is worth remembering to wear appropriate mountain footwear and to have a map and compass in case of loss of orientation.

Accommodation

During the hike on Carrantuohill, there are no mountain huts that offer accommodation. The best place to stay before or after climbing the summit is Killarney, where there are many hotels, guesthouses and hostels. However, it is worth considering pitching a tent at Cronin's Yard, where you can find a campsite with basic facilities. However, remember that there is no possibility to pitch a tent in the mountain area, as it is a protected area.
