Introduction

Gaizinkalns is the highest peak in Latvia, standing at an elevation of 311.6 m. Although not an impressive height, hiking to the summit of Gaizinkalns is a beautiful experience. The trail is gentle, not too steep, and does not require any special climbing skills or equipment. It is the perfect place for family outings and nature walks.

Weather

In summer, the path to the summit of Gaizinkalns is pleasant and easy to traverse. Temperatures range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius and the trail is dry and enjoyable. With favorable weather, you can admire picturesque landscapes and forests.

In winter, the trail may be slightly more difficult due to snow cover and lower temperatures that can drop below freezing. Although the snow adds charm to the landscape, it is important to remember to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear that provides warmth and grip.

How to get there?

The best way to reach Latvia and Gaizinkalns is by flying to Riga Airport (RIX). From the airport, you can rent a car, take a bus, or take a train to Madona, a city located about 25 km from Gaizinkalns. You can then continue your journey by car to the trailhead.

To begin the hike to Gaizinkalns, head to the parking area near the summit. The parking area is located on the P31 road, which leads to Gaizinkalns. To reach the summit, simply follow the trail markers.

Trail to the summit

The terrain is diverse, but mostly covered with forest. The trail is well marked and leads through beautiful forested areas. Climbing to the summit takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on your pace. No additional climbing equipment is required and the trail is suitable even for children.

There are no shelters on the way to the summit of Gaizinkalns. Therefore, it is worth planning your stay in Madona, where there are numerous hotels, guesthouses, and accommodation options. Madona is also an ideal place to get to know the culture and history of Latvia, as well as to relax after hiking to Gaizinkalns.
