Introduction

Zla Kolata is the tallest peak in Montenegro, reaching 2534 m above sea level. The mountains are part of the Prokletije range, which is exceptionally picturesque and offers diverse terrain. Due to steep ascents and long, but fairly gentle inclines, the trail to the summit does not require particular climbing skills. Nonetheless, it does require good physical fitness.

Weather

During the summer, temperatures on Zla Kolata typically range around 10-15°C. Days are usually sunny, but rainfall can occur, especially in July and August. Before setting out, it is worth checking the weather forecast to avoid storms.

In winter, the Zla Kolata peak is covered in snow, and temperatures drop below zero. Climbing in winter is more difficult and requires appropriate equipment and experience. The trails may be less visible, which makes navigation more challenging.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Podgorica Airport. From there, one can rent a car or use public transport to get to the town of Plav, located at the foot of the mountains. In Plav, one can stay overnight and then proceed to the village of Vusanje.

Trailhead

The trailhead to Zla Kolata is located in the village of Vusanje. In Vusanje, one can leave the car in a free parking lot located near the starting point. The trail is well marked, and the first signs leading to the summit are visible from the parking lot.

Trail to the summit

The trail leads through diverse terrain, initially through forests, and then through meadows and grassy slopes. Trail marking is good, which makes navigation easier. The total hiking time to the summit is about 6-7 hours. Climbing Zla Kolata does not require specialist climbing equipment, but it is worth bringing trekking poles.

Accommodation

There are no mountain huts on the way to the Zla Kolata peak, so it is worth considering staying in the village of Vusanje before starting the hike or after returning from the summit. In Vusanje, one can find several guesthouses and hotels that offer reasonably priced accommodation. Alternatively, for more experienced hikers, camping in the mountains may be an option, but it is worth remembering to prepare appropriately and observe safety and environmental protection guidelines.
