Introduction

Moldoveanu Peak reaches a height of 2544 m above sea level. It is the highest peak in Romania, located in the Fagaras Mountains. The route to the summit is relatively easy and does not require climbing or specialist equipment. However, due to its height, the trail can be demanding for some people.

Weather

In the summer, temperatures on the trail can range from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. Conditions are usually favourable, but it's worth remembering that mountain weather can change quickly. In the summer, the route to the summit is easy and well-signposted.

In winter, the Moldoveanu trail is more difficult due to large amounts of snow and ice. Temperatures can drop below -15 degrees Celsius, and the wind can be very strong. Winter climbing requires appropriate equipment such as crampons, an ice axe and warm clothing.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is Sibiu Airport. To get to the starting point, you can rent a car or use local public transport. Cabana Bâlea Lac is the starting point and is about 76 km from Sibiu.

Trailhead

The trailhead is located at Cabana Bâlea Lac. There is a car park where you can leave your car before starting the hike.

Trail to the summit

The trail leads through various terrains, such as forests, meadows and rocky ridges. The trail is well-marked with red triangles. The total walking time to the summit is about 6-8 hours. The trail is easy, and climbing is not required, although some sections may be steep.

Accommodation

There is no mountain hut on the way to the summit, but you can pitch a tent at one of the many camping spots. It is also possible to find accommodation in nearby towns, such as Cabana Bâlea Lac or Cabana Căpățâna.
