Introduction

Kebnekaise is the highest peak in Sweden at 2099 metres above sea level. The climb is not very difficult, but it does require some fitness and preparation. At the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Weather

In the summer, the temperature in the mountains ranges between 5 and 15°C. The weather can be variable, so be prepared for rain, strong wind, and fog. Despite the trail having no significant elevation gain, it can be rocky and muddy in places, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

In the winter, Kebnekaise is covered with a thick layer of snow, and the temperature can drop below -20°C. Climbing in winter is more challenging and requires greater experience and appropriate gear, such as crampons and an ice axe.

How to get there?

The best way to get to Sweden is by plane, landing at Kiruna Airport (KRN). From there, you can take a bus to Nikkaluokta, the starting point for the Kebnekaise hike.

Trailhead

There is a car park in the village of Nikkaluokta where you can leave your car. The hike to Kebnekaise Fjällstation is a 19 km trek from Nikkaluokta.

Trail to the summit

The trail to Kebnekaise passes through a diverse terrain, including forest paths and rocky slopes. The trail is well-marked, and it takes around 6-8 hours to reach the summit from the starting point (Kebnekaise Fjällstation). The trail does not require any additional climbing gear, but it can be demanding due to its length and changing terrain conditions. The trail is suitable for people of different hiking experience levels, but it is recommended that children are accompanied by adults throughout the hike.

Accommodation

On the way to the summit, there is the Kebnekaise Fjällstation mountain hut. It is an ideal place to stay, as it is located roughly halfway between Nikkaluokta and the Kebnekaise summit. The mountain hut offers various accommodation options, from private rooms to shared dormitories. You can also eat meals, take a shower, use the laundry facilities or drying room at the mountain hut. It is recommended to book accommodation at the mountain hut in advance, especially during the summer season when there are many tourists.
